We had the pleasure to have Tara Mackey on our podcast.
Tara is a Living Health Expert and Author of “Cured by Nature: How to Heal from the Inside Out, Find Happiness, and Discover Your True Self.” She also runs a successful website called: The Organic Life Blog.
We covered a bunch of topics. Specifically health and beauty tips, which include the use of Coconut Oil. According to Mackey, Coconuts are the “tree of life” and can produce drink, fiber, food, fuel, utensils, musical instruments, and much more.
This magical fruit/nut/seed has a high price on the grocery shelves. “I love food and I love DIY crafts, so I figured I’d make some myself and use it for health projects at home a few years ago. It was successful and easy, so today it’s my go-to method, as it saves big bucks! One coconut should give you approximately an ounce of coconut oil” according to Mackey.
Here is What You’ll Need:
1 Coconut
1 Fork
1 Knife
Coffee Filters
1 or 2 Jars
The first step, of course, is open your coconut (I use a hatchet) and:
Step 2: Heat your coconut meat slightly over low heat in order to make cutting easier.
Step 3: Cut your coconut meat into small pieces.
Step 4: Throw it in a food processor or blender. Blend on high.
Step 5: Put a coffee filter or cheesecloth over a wide-mouth jar.
Step 6: Pour or spoon a small amount of the coconut mixture onto the cloth.
Step 7: Squeeze the coconut milk into the jar.
Step 8: Refrigerate & leave it unattended for at least 24 hours. The curd and the oil will separate. If you wish to discard the curd, wait 48 hours and scoop it out. However, the curd is just as wonderful and useful as the oil, which is on the bottom!
Beauty products with the best ingredients tend to be the most expensive. But you no longer have to worry about that! Now you can experience a luxurious hair mask for a fraction of the price – and enjoy it from the comfort of your own home! Save cash by turning to your kitchen cabinet the next time your hair needs a moisture boost or some TLC.
Coconut oil stimulates hair growth by getting deep into hair follicles. It is high in good fatty acids and promotes your scalps health; fighting against itchiness, fungus and dandruff. Coconut oil adds luster, shine and softness to the hair, preventing hair breakage and split ends and contributing to hair length, health and growth.
To Create a Coconut Oil Hair Mask:
INGREDIENTS:
5-10 drops of essential oil (lavender for calm, citrus for clarity, peppermint to wake up)
2-5 tablespoons of coconut oil
HOW TO:
- Mix the essential oils and coconut oil together with a wooden spoon.
- Heat this mixture up on the stove – no longer than 3 minutes. Heating your oil activates it and feels luxurious when applied as a treatment.
- Transfer mixture to a bowl and let it cool.
- Massage coconut oil into your hair. Focus directly on dry ends, split ends and your scalp.
- Leave for 30-60 minutes or overnight.
- Wash out with 2-3 washes of shampoo. Since coconut oil is so fatty in it’s concentration, it tends to take more washes to get out of your hair.
The more hair you have, the more coconut oil you will need.
Coconut oil also makes a great base for other beauty products, such as scrubs and moisturizers. Add your favorite essential oil, coconut oil and Himalayan salt to a small bowl and use it as an exfoliator. Additionally, coconut oil + any essential oil will give you a totally natural body oil, which is great for dry skin, chapped lips, removing makeup, as a teeth whitener and so much more. The possibilities are endless! Just have fun – and smile, knowing you saved yourself some $ along the way!
