When you think of the most exciting up-and-coming talents in the LA music scene, it’s hard to ignore Ernando Recendez. His eclectic style ranges from Top 40 hits, Rock, R&B, Pop – all this, plus classic favorites, make his sound one that will break bounds across age groups! His musical prowess is truly building him quite the following from the young and old alike.
How did you find your passion for music?
Growing up in a household surrounded by music, I think music found me. I knew early on I couldn’t run away from something so natural to me. I really can’t imagine doing anything else.
As a child, what and who were your musical influences, and how have you used them to shape who you are as a singer and songwriter?
All-time favorite: Michael Jackson. I think every kid growing up watching Michael tried dancing like him, sounding like him, myself especially. As I got older, I learned to appreciate the musicianship in his music and the creativity in how he performed.
What’s more fun for you, singing or songwriting, and why?
Singing is my thing. It’s a pastime in my all-the-time. It’s my happy place if you want to call it that.
When writing a song, what inspires you?
A beautiful thing called the groove. If I’m writing and the song doesn’t have groove, then the song doesn’t have groove. It’s as simple as that. I place so much of myself in my music that sometimes it feels like the song writes itself. Those moments are divine. If I can’t grasp what you were feeling in your song, then I can’t find your groove. Respect the groove.
You are very talented; that’s a given. What’s your favorite instrument to play and why?
If you know me, you know my favorite instrument is the bass. It wasn’t always the bass, but I grew to love it. It plays such a big part in the “groove,” as I talked about. But to be in the band I wanted to be in at the time, they needed a drummer, maybe in an alternate universe, I’m the bass player.
How would you describe your musical evolution over the years?
I genuinely find enjoyment in hearing a new song. It’s helped shape my sound and style. The stuff I listen to now I would’ve never thought I’d ever listened to if you asked me just two years ago, heck, even a year ago. I’m constantly looking for new sounds, new ways of inspiring. It really does help you dream and achieve those dreams.
What projects are in the pipeline for you this year?
Well, we, the Nandos, finally finished getting our makeshift home studio set up, so we have some new original music ready to be tracked (recorded) as well as some CDs, merch, all that fun stuff. Come down to a show, say hi, and party with us! I promise you won’t be disappointed!
