How to Get Promoted at Work

If you’ve been at the same job for a while and have been doing your best, you might start expecting a promotion in the near future. However, most of the time, promotions don’t just happen. Even if you get noticed and your work does get appreciated, there might be something missing. So, if you’d like to know how to actually land that promotion, here are a couple of tips that might help you.

    Be confident

The secret to getting a promotion is acting like you already got it. Show your superior that you can handle the next level by working as if you’re already there. However, this doesn’t mean you should start ordering people around and doing your boss’s work; simply be as confident as you can be. One way to do this is by asking for a bit more demanding projects, and of course, owning them.

You should also maintain a cool attitude – if you show that you can remain cool under stress, you’ll probably get noticed by your boss. Furthermore, you’re supposed to act as a role model to everybody else. This means that you should always meet the deadlines, ask smart questions, help your clients, and learn from your mistakes.

    Avoid gossips and politics

If you want to get promoted, you need to show that you are trustworthy and unbiased, which means that you should never be caught gossiping or discussing sensitive topics. Sure, you should be familiar with politics, and you should socialize with your coworkers, but you should never openly express your dislike for any team member.

Moreover, discussing politics also shows the tendency to favor one group over another, which is natural, but not a good trait to have when in a position of power. If you show that you can rise above such temptations and remain neutral, you’ll show that you are fair and professional. This way, you’d be more likely to stand out from the rest and earn the promotion you want.

    Continue your education

Just because you have a job, it doesn’t mean that you should no longer educate yourself. If your company offers professional development classes, don’t hesitate to sign up. Or, if you think you could use some financing skills, for example, perhaps you should get a certificate IV in finance and mortgage broking. Moreover, it’s always good to know more languages and improve your tech skills. So, depending on your field of work, see what you can learn to make your job easier and more fun, and continue educating yourself.

    Create a system of reminders

As already mentioned, one thing that goes without saying if you want to get a promotion is meeting your deadlines. However, this isn’t always easy, especially if you are in a position that includes many projects, meetings, presentations, etc. Nevertheless, it’s absolutely necessary, so do whatever you can to make sure you never forget any important date.

For example, you can buy a big wall calendar, hang it next to your desk, and mark the important dates on it. You can also mark the dates in your planner, just make sure to do it properly and check your planner every day. If you are more tech-savvy, you can use your phone or PC as well. However, don’t forget to create a backup and update it every day, just in case something goes wrong and you can’t use one or the other.

    Talk to your boss

No matter how well you do your job and how much effort you’re putting into your work, it doesn’t mean much if your superior doesn’t notice it. Unfortunately, expecting somebody to notice you when they clearly don’t is not going to get you far. Regardless of the reasons, some bosses simply don’t pay enough attention.

This is why you should make it clear to your boss that you want to be promoted; you can do this by asking whether you are on the right track, or by asking for a feedback on your work. Taking this kind of initiative shows that you are ambitious, not afraid of challenges, and aware of your own worth. Just make sure there actually are clear and objective reasons for promoting you, besides you needing more money.

When it comes to promotions, your job performance is important, but it’s not the only thing that counts. It’s not enough to just be good at what you do. So, don’t gossip and discuss sensitive topics with your coworkers, and try to be relaxed and confident at all times, especially in stressful situations. Most importantly – advocate for yourself, be clear about your goal, and have no doubt that you will reach it.
