What’s wrong with your face?
Why are you hiding behind filters?
What’s wrong with your life?
Why does it matter to you that everyone knows where you are?
If your’e puzzled by my questions, ask yourself if you’ve ever used a Snapchat filter. It may seem ridiculous to think of in such a way, but the truth of the matter is, no one wants to be who they are anymore.
The Millennial obsession with filters and angles proves that no one is really comfortable in their own skin. Whether you believe yourself to be magazine cover worthy or a hot mess, chances are you will use some sort of filter before you hit send.
Snapchat is notorious for its insane filters that are key in making you feel better about your appearance. Yes, even if you are posting yourself up as a puppy licking the screen, you are still hiding behind the snap.
Today we can be more tan, more pale, black and white; we can label exactly where we are and send video clips of a life we want everyone to believe we’re living .
Filtering ourselves has become second nature. Most don’t even realize they’re doing it anymore.
Two swipes to the left and send. You even have the motions memorized.
It raises the question if a ‘selfie’ is even really a selfie anymore. If you filter and edit your photo to the extent that people would be confused looking at you in real life and looking at you in your snap, what are you accomplishing?
Everyone wants to look good -myself included- but we want to look good on screen; in person, it seems we really don’t care. So, if you’re sweatpants, hair tied, chilling’ with no makeup on, kind of girl, why wouldn’t you snap about that?
People are getting ready today. Not to go out, but to post. And it’s not just the physicality of the snap; it’s the mentality as well.
Snap that you’re at a concert. Snap that you’re on the beach. Snap that you’re out to dinner. That you’re in the hospital, that you’re dead. Whatever it is, just snap it.
Why is it that we care so much about how others view us? Don’t say that this isn’t what this obsession is… because that’s exactly what it is.
Filters. We have life filters. We have created them with our social media and intend on keeping them around.
Being yourself doesn’t exist anymore. You can’t just sit at home and enjoy a Netflix marathon with BAE without snapping that you’re just sitting at home enjoying a Netflix marathon with BAE. We don’t send snaps when our faces are broken out, and we’re having a bad hair day, only when we’re all dolled up ready to party.
The true colors of personality have been lost in filters and edits. Being ourselves is nearly impossible anymore. We are the filtered generation. The one’s who think they’re good enough for everything except for being who we are.
Maybe Hollywood is to blame. Maybe it’s Snapchat and Instagram’s fault. Whatever it is, it seems to be getting worse.
Millennials love to declare their individuality and independence, but all aim to look the same. The cookie cutter look is achievable with filtering your life and your appearance.
So let me ask you again….
What’s wrong with your face?
Why are you hiding behind filters?
What’s wrong with your life?
Why does it matter to you that everyone knows where you are?
