Building a startup ecosystem from the ground up in Puerto Rico
During a recent interview with Anthony Delgado, CEO of Disrupt, Sofia Stolberg talks about how and why she started Piloto 151, the first ever co-working space in Puerto Rico. Unlike places like New York City where WeWork is a household name, the tech / startup culture is still brewing in the caribbean. Sofia discusses how a cultural shift was required to forest the startup ecosystem that didn’t exist 5 years ago when she first started Piloto. “People didn’t know what coworking was. People would show up for a tour and ask, where are the private offices?” she explains.
Women Tech Over
Sofia is also the founder of Women Tech Over, a mentorship community of women in tech who host meetups and workshops to inspire other women to pursue careers in STEM and advocate for more inclusive work environments. They also work to help female developers find new job opportunities and gain additional exposure for their tech careers. They also host all female coding workshops on the island of Puerto Rico. Sofia has plans to expand the program all throughout Latin America to help foster in a new generation of female software developers.
