Reasons New Yorkers Should Try Therapy

    New Yorkers are a tough breed. We deal with absurd traffic, crowded trains and streets, strange (and sometimes dangerous) situations, and more. We’re known for being fast-talking, hard-working, and — let’s face it — a little bit rude. So maybe it’s no surprise that so many of our hardened New York City urbanites avoid talk therapy as a treatment for their mental health issues and stresses. But that’s a big mistake. Nothing could be more “New York” than taking advantage of the world-class mental health care that New York City offers. Here are a few reasons that you should do just that.

    Because therapy isn’t just for “crazy” people

    You don’t have to be “crazy” to go to therapy, and those who seek it out certainly aren’t weak. Mental health is a spectrum, just like physical health. And, in the same way, that you don’t have to be dying of a terrible illness to go to a doctor’s appointment, you don’t have to be struggling with severe mental illness to seek therapy. (And don’t say “crazy,” by the way — it’s inaccurate and rude, and not in that cool New Yorker-rude way.)

    Turning to therapy can help you manage stress and make you feel better. You can become, in many ways, a better person — happier, more productive, and more supportive to the people around you. This is not to say that therapy is a cure-all, because it isn’t. But therapy is a great idea for anyone hoping to feel — and be — better.

    There are so many reasons to be frustrated around here. No wonder we feel like our mental health is under attack (even if we don’t admit it).

    Therapy can help. Nothing can erase the traffic on the BQE or take all of those bankers off of the Lex at rush hour, but you can give yourself the mental space and the strategies that you need to handle it all better.

    New York City is the capital of the world. It’s the largest and most important city in the most powerful country in the world. It is a destination for artists and professionals of all kinds. So it’s no surprise that NYC therapists are really, really good.

    There’s a good chance that you can get affordable care from a truly excellent New York City therapist while getting a huge chunk of the cost of that care covered by your New York City-area health insurance provider.

    New Yorkers like to say that have the best of everything — and there’s certainly an argument to be made that we do! We’ve got everything from the best pizza in the nation to the best opera. So do yourself a favor and avail yourself of the great mental health care that New York City has to offer.
