2018 was a fantastic year for movies, with North American box office sales reaching $11.9 billion, even as streaming juggernauts like Netflix and Hulu continued to plant their digital flags in the ground.
But so far, 2019 is shaping up to be even better! Here are five can’t-miss movies coming out this year.
- “Avengers: Endgame”
2018 saw the 10th anniversary of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Though time certainly flies by when we last saw our favorite Marvel superheroes, things weren’t exactly looking up.
Now, it’s time to see how they stack up against Thanos once and for all. “Endgame” promises to forever alter the MCU, though just how things will shake out for the likes of Captain America, Iron Man, Black Widow, and more is anyone’s guess.
Will they lose? Will they create a parallel universe a la Back to the Future II? Who knows!
“Endgame” will be out in the snap of your fingers, with a release date of April 26. In the meantime, refresh your memory by checking out the last film on movies counter.
While Jordan Peele is still quite the funnyman, his feature debut, “Get Out” showed audiences that he’s quite capable of provoking screams, too. The film was such a hit, it even scored Peele an Oscar last awards season.
Since then, Peele has been quite busy, most notably working on the upcoming retooling of “The Twilight Zone.” Now, he’s ready to make audiences shriek once again with his latest film, “Us.”
The film centers around a family who escapes the suburbs for a lovely vacation, only to stumble upon murderous mirror versions of themselves. Judging by the trailer, expect more biting social commentary wrapped in one heck of a scary story.
- “Toy Story 4”
Truth be told, it’s a little surprising that “Toy Story 4” exists. The last film ended on such a heart-warming note that trying to top it seems like an almost impossible task.
But if anyone is up for the challenge, it’s Pixar!
“Toy Story 4” continues to story of Buzz, Woody, Jessie, and the gang as they embark on a road trip along with their new owner. Expect the same heartfelt themes of previous films, along with new laughs thanks to new castmembers Key & Peele, Tony Hale, and Keanu Reeves.
Open “Toy Story 4″‘s chest of wonders this summer.
- “IT: Chapter Two”
Despite numerous setbacks, including the departure of “True Detective” scribe Cary Fukunaga, the 2017 iteration of “IT” turned out to be quite the hit.
Now, two years later, The Losers’ Club is set to make their return to the big screen to stop Pennywise once and for all.
Like its source material and the 1990s miniseries, “IT: Chapter Two” will focus on the adult lives of Derry’s troubled youth. So far, the casting seems superb, with Bill Hader, James McAvoy, Jessica Chastain, and more portraying Richie, Bill, and Beverley respectively.
“IT: Chapter Two” slinks into the sewers late this summer.
- “Detective Pikachu”
Fans were more than concerned when Warner Bros. announced plans to release a live action film in the Pokemon universe. On paper, there’s simply no reason a hard-boiled detective story starring a talking Pikachu (played by Ryan Reynolds) should work.
However, the trailer for “Detective Pikachu” seemed to pleasantly surprise even the most hardcore fans.
Though the CGI creatures seem a little nightmarish, “Detective Pikachu” is shaping up to be an exciting release. Look for it this May.
