As children, we believed that we could do anything we put our minds to; how dare we let the world change that.
Doctors and lawyers. Singers and dancers. Teachers and baseball players.
We had so many dreams once upon the time; when did we forget them? They say as you grow older, you realize that certain dreams just aren’t achievable. Reality is something that we need to deal with. Some of these things are just not in the cards for us.
Why can’t we be whatever we want? Why can’t we have everything? I, as well as many other Millennials, have fallen into the trap of dread and anguish. We want certain things but allow society and the “norm” to get in the way. When did it become okay for the world to dictate our innocent wants and desires?
We dreamt of changing the world; why can’t we? We’ve dreamt of traveling and meeting new people, so let’s do it. We’ve dreamt of beautiful apartments in the city and houses with picket fences, let’s have them.
Just because we weren’t born with trust funds and career paths doesn’t mean we can’t make something of ourselves. Somewhere in this world, there is somebody that has everything, but not long ago, had nothing. Why can’t we be that person?
If you want to write a book, what’s stopping you? If you want to open a restaurant, do it. Of course, it’s not always as simple as that, but hard work really can get you anywhere you want to be. Doubting it?
1. Chris Pratt, James Cameron, and Jim Carey were living out of vans before they remembered their dreams.
2. Daniel Craig, Ella Fitzgerald and Chris Gardner (the guy the movie The Pursuit of Happyness is about) were all homeless, sleeping in shelters and on park benches.
3. Walt Disney was told he, “lacked imagination.” (Idiots.)
4. Carol King wrote hit song after hit song for others to sing. It wasn’t until her heart was shattered into a million little pieces that she realized she had a voice.
5. JK Rowling? Fired. Oprah? Fired. Einstein? Called a Fool. Fred Astaire? Told he had no talent.
I think it’s safe to say they’re
all are doing pretty well now…
Sure, you’ve seen memes and inspiration quotes all over social media, but have you ever really stopped to think about what these people actually accomplished? You can categorize them as, “the lucky few” if that makes you feel better, but why can’t you- why can’t we be a part of that, “lucky few”?
If you’re unhappy with your life, make a change. If you feel unfulfilled, then find what completes you. We’re all going to fail. No one, and I mean no one on this planet has ever reached success without facing some failure.
Remember in elementary school when they asked you what you wanted to be when you grew up? At that very moment, you didn’t think about money or lifestyle. You replied with the purest, most honest answer right from your heart and that answer was written under your picture. Revisit what you said. Find that inner child and let yourself dream again.
Cease the moment. This is the time to take risks and remember what we always wanted. One day, lives will be dedicated to family and all other aspects of life. Until that day comes, laugh in the faces of people who tell you, you can’t and prove them wrong.
Put on your superhero cape and conquer.
