Introducing The ‘Nose Job’ Capital Of The World: Tehran

shutterstock_96099557-copy-1024x400Many individuals often times feel they are born with less than desirable facial features- in particular their nose. For this reason many people, both men and women, seek out cosmetic plastic surgery to restore balance and symmetry. But where do they go for expert strategies you ask?

While our society may recognize Tehran as the capital land of the Islamic Revolution, there is a new industry emerging from the Iranian culture- a variety of rhinoplasty methods. Believe it or not, Tehran is home to more treatments per person than Hollywood, LA. By law and translation under social reform, there are no limitations regarding nose surgery as it is an accepted and popular right of passage for adolescents. As more young people in Tehran  seek mainstream opportunities in the fashion, beauty and business markets, specialty rhinoplasty approaches will continue to rise.

Cosmetic surgery is such a commonality among the youth, most surgeons have consulting suites spread all around downtown area and the the northern region of the city- like a traditional Americanized Starbucks. I’ll take a double shot caramel latte please and one mildly invasive procedure to go…Thanks!

While simply walking from corner to corner, you are bound to see a young adult with bandages across their nose- a tell-tale sign of someone who, ‘has had a little work done.”

There is no stigma. In fact, most ladies openly wear “bandages of honor” on their noses to show they’ve had the surgery. Since in the Iranian culture female bodies, as well as their hair, are largely kept covered by a hijab, or head scarf, and in some cases, a chador, a large shawl to cover the body, there is heavy emphasis on tweaking what can be visually seen- hence the nose.

Think of the face as a fashion statement. Your nose would be your ultimate and best accessory. The youth of Iran, especially women, acknowledge the divide and hope to attain Hollywood’s ‘doll face’ expectation- where smaller noses are considered more beautiful. There is a perceived notion behind the pronounced features of what most call “the Persian nose”. Course of action is taken, derived from the western idea of beauty, in an attempt to adapt with the fashionable, lifestyle standards of luxury.  The ethnic Persian nose is out of vogue. This is why nose job operations are carried out 7 times more than in the United States- despite high financial cost and obligation.

Dr. Ramtin Kassir, M.D., F.A.C.S is a leading, top triple board certified plastic surgeon well-known in the NYC tri-state field. Dr. Kassir caters to a high-end celebrity clientele as he is a major social media influencer on IG himself. He also has extended experience and prowess performing a wide variety of ethnic facial treatments both invasive and non-invasive. A round the clock expert, Kassir may produce around four operations a day – up to five to six days a week. Since plastic surgery on the nose is so widespread in the country of Iran, some clients travel from abroad to have these advanced surgical operations. However, Dr. Kassir is well-versed in such targeted treatments because of his personal understanding of the cultural demands. He is a proclaimed “King of Ethnic Rhinoplasty.”

The goal is not to make an Persians look Caucasian. A surgeon must identify the custom features that make that person unique. The nasal proportion guidelines that plastic surgeons in North America are taught have not, traditionally, taken different ethnicities into account. Therefore Dr. Kassir has learned and mastered techniques to assess and accommodate ethnic features in order to achieve a result that retains the patient’s true ethnicity.  He even operates in the middle east every year and has broad and extensive training with middle eastern noses (Persian, Lebanese, Palestinian, Jordanian, Syrian, Israeli, Iraqi, and Turkish)

The vast majority of Tehran’s younger generation encourage the benefits of rhinoplasty. The reasons behind the surgery may include self-esteem and marriageability, as well as medical issues and the fact that some women in the country find the Islamic practice of the hijab so limiting when it comes to beauty. Rhinoplasty rates have been rising dramatically in the Islamic republic.

Is this a trend which will inevitably come to end, or is the fusion inspired blend of Persian motifs and design with Hollywood style the perfect balance bringing about optimal results in rhinoplasty?
