3 Things You Should Avoid To Achieve Happiness

Achieving true happiness isn’t something you do overnight. It isn’t a one-step process. It isn’t as simple as buying this or doing that. It is changing your entire lifestyle: finding what brings you joy and removing what is bringing negativity in your life. It means letting go in order for new things to come along. It’s a process of discovering yourself, and in this process, you’ll be doing things that scare you, maybe even things that you’ve been avoiding. Because more often than not, these are the things that make the difference between an okay life and a remarkable one. You need to get out of your comfort zone in order to achieve happiness.

Throughout this journey, it is easy to fall into pitfalls that can make it difficult to stay happy. Part of the process of achieving happiness is learning about the things that can steal it away from you so that you can avoid them. Here are 3 things you should avoid in order to find happiness in life.

    Unhealthy Habits

There are certain actions that we might think make us ‘happy’ because they give us immediate euphoria. But, in the long run, they only make us more unhappy. When the euphoria passes we are back feeling just like we did before. That feeling of happiness is just momentaneous, but the consequences for our health can be forever. Eating junk food is one of these activities, as well as watching too much t.v or playing video games all day.

This of course also includes alcohol and drugs. As good as they make you feel, it’s not worth the damage the damage they cause to both your physical and mental health. You may already know some of them, like liver or lung disease, but did you know that mixing drugs and alcohol can cause brain damage? The list of illnesses related to drugs and alcohol is endless. Do you think you can be truly happy if you’re knowingly damaging your health?

    Comparing Yourself to Others

In the times of Instagram, it is hard not to compare yourself to other people. It seems like everyone else is having fun all the time, like they’re achieving more things, like they’re happier, doesn’t it? But often what we see on social media isn’t the same in real life. Everyone has their struggles, no matter how hard they try to portray a perfect life. Furthermore, you are not in competition with anyone else. If they’re achieving things, great for them! You should focus on outdoing your past and becoming the best version of yourself. Everyone moves at different paces and you shouldn’t be distracted from your own path by how fast other people are going.

    Letting Your Emotions Control You

One of the biggest lies about happiness is that people who are truly happy are vibrant all the time and that they never experience any emotion other than joy. Everyone has off days, everyone has struggles and things that make us sad or angry. The difference is that happy people have learned to control their emotions rather than letting their emotions control them. This doesn’t mean in any way that you should suppress your feelings. On the contrary, the best way to learn how to manage your emotions is by expressing them in a healthy way.

Understanding what causes you anger, sadness, stress, joy, etc, is the first step to controlling your emotions in order to deal with situations in a more assertive and calmer way. You can start by keeping a journal where you write how you felt during the day, what triggered those emotions, and what was your reaction. This way you can learn from what made you blow up in anger and next time you feel this emotion coming you’ll be able to handle the situation better so that it doesn’t interfere with your happiness.

As the saying goes, it’s all about the journey, not the destination. Happiness isn’t somewhere you can get to or a prize you receive. It is a process and a way of life. If you focus every day on doing something to improve yourself, you’re already on the journey of happiness. Remember not to fall into the traps of happiness, some of which we described above, in order to keep on track and stay happy through it all.
